A former High Court Chief Justice and a former judge joined lawyers to demand Supreme Court bench for South India in Hyderabad.
Addressing a convention on the subject held by the State Committee of All India Lawyers Union (AILU) here on Sunday, former Chief Justice of Madras High Court and former Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission B. Subhashan Reddy said Hyderabad was once considered for such a bench because of its geographical advantage and regretted that it was yet to happen.
Former A.P. High Court judge, Justice S. Parvatha Rao also held similar views.
Justice Reddy said in the past Hyderabad was also proposed to be the country's second capital.
Senior lawyers quoted other eminent jurists on Supreme Court bench in city. Former Supreme Court Judge Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer recalled that the Law Commission had among others, recommended that four Cassation Benches be set up in the North Zone at New Delhi, South Zone at Chennai or Hyderabad, East Zone in Kolkata and West Zone in Mumbai to deal with all appellate work arising out of the orders/judgements of the High Courts of that particular region. Others who spoke of the need for Supreme Court bench were Chairman of AP Bar Council A. Narasimha Reddy and President of the All-India Federation of Women Lawyers' Associations M. Bhaskara Lakshmi.
