Ex-colonel’s son held for land fraud

January 26, 2013 01:09 pm | Updated 01:09 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Police on Friday arrested a real estate businessman, Khushro Khusro Jalnawala, and his wife, Reena K. Jalnawala, hailing from Pune, on the charge of duping a person from the city of Rs. 18.5 crore.

Jalnawala’s father was a retired military colonel. Taking advantage of his familiarity with the military hierarchy and proximity with the authorities, the accused had allegedly led others to believe that he too was a military officer. He approached Tavinder Singh Kohli, managing trustee of Guru Nanak Educational Society, claiming that the defence authorities had allotted plots to him.

To convince Mr. Kohli, he had produced fabricated documents suggesting that he had been allotted plots measuring 40 acres at Military Dairy Farm near Bowenpally and 20 acres at Tolichowki. He offered to sell the plots at the rate of Rs. 1.5 crore per acre and allegedly collected Rs. 18.5 crore towards advance through cash and cheques. Later, he vanished from the scene and stopped responding to Mr. Kohli’s phone calls. Based on his complaint, the Central Crime Station of Hyderabad registered a criminal case. A team led by Inspector P. Madhukar Swamy arrested the couple and presented them here in a local court.
