Cases have have been filed against five scrap leaders arrested at Vijayawada in connection with the theft of electronic voting machines (EVM) from a godown there and the case is committed to the court.

Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal said the Election Commission, on the other hand, was examining the reply given by the Krishna district collector, who is the district election officer, to its show-cause notice over the theft.

The CEO said the 10 balloting units and 15 control units of the EVMs had been found missing from the godown recently. The offenders had stolen the units by making a hole in a window of the godown. However, six balloting units were recovered. The remaining units were presumed to have been melted to make plastic goods.
