In response to media reports about the contamination of ground water due to improper disposal of offal and carcases by a mechanised slaughterhouse a philanthropist has helped set up a water purification plant here.
The water purification plant that disposes water to users with any time water cards was inaugurated here on Monday by Joint Collector Vasam Venkateswarlu, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) secretary M. Kanakadurga and District Panchayat Officer Venkateswarlu.
Media reports
The plant was donated P. Naga Sahitya, an Assistant Engineer with TS Genco at Nagarjuanasagar, in memory of her grandmother A. Vasundhara Devi. Ms. Naga Sahitya said that she came to know about the plight of tanda residents and their struggle to get drinking water through the reports published in The Hindu and felt bad about it. “I decided to do something to address their problem and as a result the water plant was established,” she said. A series of reports were published in these columns in the last three months about the ground water pollution by the improper disposal of animal waste by the Al-Kabeer mechanised slaughter house at Rudraram. The residents have been struggling to get potable water for the past two decades.
Safe water
Speaking after inaugurating the plant, Mr. Venkateswarlu said that this was a combined effort by media and donor Naga Sahitya to provide safe drinking water for the people with the help of district administration.
Ms. Kanakadurga urged the villagers not to misuse the water and said all their problems would be solved in a phased manner.
The residents of the Tanda felicitated Ms. Naga Sahitya for her contribution.
