A division bench of the Hyderabad High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice T. Rajini on Friday permitted the Telangana Election Commission to go ahead with election to Pahadisharif gram panchayat near Hyderabad.

The Bench was granting this direction and stayed the orders of single-judge in this regard. Pahadisharif gram panchayat was sought to be merged with Jalapally municipality and this action of the State Government was stayed by the High Court.

By virtue of this stay order, Pahadisharif continues to be an independent gram panchayat.

The State Election Commission had on June 23 issued notification to conduct elections to the gram panchayat. The State Government had filed a writ petition challenging the decision of the Election Commission. The Government had contended that there was no gram panchayat as on date for an election to be conducted. The single-judge had stayed the election notification.

Naveen Kumar Yadav, resident of Pahadisharif, had contended that when the proposed merger was stayed, the Government could not insist on stalling election process.
