Abetment to suicide case under section 306 of IPC booked against Prof. Harish Vizra
The Osmania University police, who booked a case against Professor Harish Vizra, Proctor of English and Foreign Languages University (Eflu), for abetment to suicide under section 306 of IPC, said on Monday that they were seeking legal opinion before arresting him. Prof. Vizra is said to have issued a memo to Mudasir Kamran, a research scholar from Jammu and Kashmir, after his roommate Vasim Salim complained of physical and mental harassment. Kamran had committed suicide by hanging in his hostel room on March 2.
Meanwhile, protests by students continued on the second day today at Eflu seeking termination of services of Prof. Vizra from his academic and administrative duties. They sought monetary compensation of Rs.20 lakh to Kamran’s family, besides providing job to one of the family members.
The administration should also take steps to educate his two sisters.
Their other demands included resolving the existing cases filed against errant varsity officials.
Students squatted in front of the administrative block and raised slogans denouncing the attitude of the Vice-Chancellor.
Holding placards, the protestors held university officials responsible for the incident and warned of intensifying the agitation if concrete steps were not taken to prevent their recurrence. Later, in the evening they took out a rally.
The protesters also took strong objection to deployment of police personnel on the campus.
