A public meeting held at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) on Saturday saw representatives from various organisations demand that a committee be constituted, with student members, to look into the circumstances that led to the suicide of Ph. D scholar Mudasir Kamran, a press note said.
Teachers’ front?
The ‘Struggle Committee for Justice for Mudasir Kamran’ claimed that a teachers’ front had been formed by a section of the EFLU faculty to condemn the “totalitarian measures” of the administration and to demand a democratic engagement with the protesting students. They reportedly demanded immediate expulsion of Proctor Harish Vijra against whom a case has already been booked alleging abetment to suicide.
Mudasir was found hanging in his hostel room on March 2, a day after he questioned by police following a complaint from his roommate. The university has been on the boil since then, with various student bodies holding demonstrations demanding suspension of the Proctor, and compensation to Mudasir’s family.
Mohammed Lateef Khan of the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee spoke at the meeting and demanded a judicial probe into the issue.
EFLU professor Aloysius also extended support to the struggle committee and appreciated the democratic protest, the press note said.
Other organisations which took part in the meeting include Telangana Praja Front, AP Civil Liberties Committee, and others. The Committee announced that it would intensify the protest until their demands were met.
