April 27, 2015 01:19 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 05:45 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The first phase of Vijayawada Metro Rail project, estimated to cost Rs. 6,823 crore, will begin in June, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Principal Advisor and Advisor to A.P. government on metro rail projects, E. Sreedharan informed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday.

Mr. Sreedharan met Mr. Naidu and submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the Metro Rail project which includes two corridors. Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venakaiah Naidu was also present.

The total length covered by the two corridors would be 26.03 km and the cost per km works out to Rs.209 crore, according to the DPR. While Corridor 1 between Pandit Nehru Bus Terminal and Penamaluru covers a distance of 12.76 km, Corridor 2 (Pandit Nehru Bus Terminal-Nidamanuru) covers 13.27 km.

Mr. Sreedharan informed the Chief Minister that Corridor 1 would be linked to the capital city of Amaravathi and Corridor 2 would be connected to Gannavaram airport.

“Whether it is going to be elevated or not will only be decided during the capital development stage,” Mr Sreedharan said, adding that underground project per kilometre would cost Rs 500-600 crore against Rs. 209 crore per kilometre if it was elevated.

Fare structure Giving a break-up of fares for transportation, the DPR mentioned the cost of the ticket to be Rs. 10 between 0-5 km, Rs. 20 between 5-10 km and Rs. 30 for 10 km above.

The DPR mentioned that 31.039 hectares of land would be required for the project -- 29.444 hectares of private land and 1.595 hectares of government land. It stated that 11.34 hectares would be required for construction of Metro Rail Depot.

“Government lands along the route may be reserved for property development to fund the project,” the report said. By January 1, 2019, one section of the Metro Rail project should be commissioned, the Chief Minister said.

While the DMRC team predicted that the traffic demand could be 2.91 lakh trips in 2019-2020 and expected to increase to 9.99 lakh trips by 2051-52, the Chief Minister and Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said the estimates were conservative and added that the traffic could be higher, considering capital institutions.

He also suggested that a Rapid Rail Transit System for Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali and Mangalagiri (VGTM) could be planned as Metro would not be feasible on this route. The projects would be discussed at the next cabinet meeting.

DPR for Vizag Metro by June15 Meanwhile, Mr. Sreedharan said the DPR Visakhapatnam Metro would be ready by June 15. He, however, presented a status report of Vizag Metro to the Chief Minister.

High-speed train proposals for connectivity between Vizag and Tirupati via Amaravathi and Bangalore to Amaravati would also be discussed, the Chief Minister said.

Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, Advisor (communications) Parakala Prabhakar, AP Special Representative K. Ramamohan Rao, Chief Secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao and Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Satish Chandra and Secretary (MA & UD) A. Giridhar were present.
