The GHMC has asked the HMR and traffic police not to remove footpath spaces to facilitate the ongoing work of the Metro Rail. GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu cited complaints on footpaths being dug up to create more space for vehicles in some places where the Metro Rail work is in progress.

“This is not right. Pedestrians are as important as the vehicles are,” he said.

If the footpath space is to be altered for the project, it was already decided that a decision would be taken by the Commissioner after a joint inspection by the GHMC, HMR and traffic police.

“Some junior staff apparently got over enthusiastic and tried to do that, and we are in touch with senior officials on the matter,” Mr. Babu said.
