DNA test leads cops to murderer

Ex-colleague held for the rape and murder of a woman eight months ago

July 15, 2013 12:38 am | Updated November 16, 2021 08:33 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

A DNA test helped the Kukatpally police catch a person, who allegedly raped and murdered a 35-year-old woman in her house at Gayatrinagar of Kukatpally eight months ago.

The victim, a mother of two, used to work in a book binding shop.

On November 5, she returned home from work for lunch. Later in the evening, her neighbours found her murdered with her clothes dishevelled.

An autopsy revealed that she was sexually assaulted.

Since there was no sign of forcible entry in the house, police believed the killer was familiar to the victim. On this presumption, investigators suspected persons frequenting her house.

Among the suspects was her ex-colleague Rajeshwar, whose mobile phone call data records indicated that he was in Gayatrinagar when the murder was committed. He had, however, denied his complicity in the crime.

In the absence of clinching evidence, investigators collected blood samples of the suspects to compare their DNA with that of the sperms found on the victim’s clothes.

“The DNA of Rajeshwar matched with the DNA of the spermatozoa on the victim’s clothes,” the police said.
