Display lists of ration cardholders: CPI(M)

May 27, 2010 05:13 pm | Updated 05:13 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the government take steps to display lists of ration cardholders whose cards were found to be ineligible before scrapping them.

CPI (M) State Secretary B. V. Raghavulu expressed concern over the decision to commence weeding out 20 lakh ration cards from June 1 on the pretext that they were bogus as the party felt that genuine families would also be affected in the process.

The removal of ration cards would not only deny supply of essentials from fair price shops, but would have an impact on the pensions being given to eligible people.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the party's two-day State secretariat meeting here on Wednesday, he said the CPI (M) State committee, which was scheduled to meet here on June 3 and 4, would chalk out an action plan to mount pressure on the government to ensure that genuine families were not affected.

Replying to queries, he alleged that ‘influential people' who were involved in land transactions in the past were now eyeing Christian properties and this was evident from encroachment of properties being reported from different parts of the State.
