All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijay Singh has dismissed as mere rumours the reports appearing in the media on the contentious statehood issue.
“Will you believe the rumours?” Mr. Singh, who has been appointed as the in-charge of State affairs, questioned the journalists outside his residence in New Delhi late on Tuesday night after Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy called on him. Both the leaders were closeted for over an hour discussing the latest political situation in the State.
The former MP Chief Minister pointed out that Telangana was a long-pending problem and promised to discuss the issue.
“Within a week I will assume charge as the State in-charge. I am coming to Hyderabad on June 28 night itself. There will be a meeting with party seniors on June 29 and I will proceed to Visakhapatnam to attend a programme on June 30,” he added. Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who was standing next to Mr. Singh, dismissed the speculative reports in the media saying that he too saw it in the print and teleivision channels.
Earlier taking time off his busy schedule in New Delhi, Mr. Reddy also met Ahmed Patel, political secretary to All India Congress Committee chief Sonia Gandhi and Union Finance Minister P.Chidambaram.
Mr. Reddy, who spent most part of the day on his arrival in New Delhi to review operations to airlift pilgrims from Uttarakhand, drove to the residence of Mr Singh and complimented him on his appointment as AICC in-charge of Andhra Pradesh.
He briefed him about the political developments, particularly the meeting being organised by Telangana Congress leaders at Nizam College here on June 30.
CM to call on Sonia
Mr. Reddy is likely to call Ms. Gandhi on Wednesday.
Separately, Ministers J. Geetha Reddy and D. K. Aruna, Rajya Sabha member K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, Union Minister M.M.Pallam Raju and Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal called on Mr. Singh.
Congress leaders are making a beeline to Delhi to understand the thinking of the party high command on the separate Telangana issue in view of reports that the Centre could come out with a decision soon.
