Jumping the red signal at a junction is almost an adventure for many motorists in Hyderabad.
The city traffic police, however, on Saturday came out with a smart plan to check the increasing signal jumping episodes by launching Automated Traffic Red Light and Speed Violation Recording System at ten junctions in the city.
In short, under the new system, motorists who jump signals will get an e-challan that too tagged with photographic evidence.
The new system, developed by the city traffic police to nail the violators, was launched by Director-General of Police R.R. Girish Kumar here on Saturday.
Capturing images
Police introduced the new system at ten junctions including Patny, CTO near Paradise, Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar, RTC crossroads, M.J. Market, Jubilee Hills check post, Madina, Srinagar Colony, Ravindra Bharathi and Visveswaraiah statue, Khairatabad.
Poles fitted with video camera and a still camera connected to a flash, have been put up a few yards away from these junctions.
The flash, connected to the camera, helps capture images even during night.
Electromagnetic sensors, placed at these ten intersections, are connected to video and still cameras.
These sensors will be activated automatically when the red signal light is on.
If a motorist crosses the stop line or zips past the red light, then sensors will send signals to cameras, which will capture three different images of the vehicle.
These images will directly land in computer server at the Police Commissioner's office in Basheerbagh where an e-challan will be generated along with photographic evidence and it will be sent to the vehicle owner by post.
Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said the new system would enable the department reduce manual interference.
