A road accident death triggered tension in city on Wednesday night when family members and relatives of the victim staged a demonstration in front of Ramgopalpet Police station by keeping the victim’s body there and pelted stones at policemen.
Seventeen-year-old Aslam of Srinivasa Nagar in Shabadguda of Warasiguda was going from Paradise to Minister’s Road along with two of his friends on a bike when the accident occurred on Monday.
A Tata Safari going from Begumpet to Ranigunj hit the oncoming bike, resulting in injuries to three of them. They were shifted to hospital, where Aslam succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday afternoon.
Alleging that the police failed to arrest the Tata Safari driver, Aslam’s friends and family members assembled at the police station around 9.30 p.m. They brought the body and kept it on the road, holding up the traffic on the bustling Ranigunj and Paradise stretch.
As more persons gathered there, tension began to build up. On seeing more policemen being rushed there, the angry mob pelted stones at them. The police after restraint for a while, later tried to chase them away.
Meanwhile, elders of the family and others came to the police station and held discussions with the police higher ups. They charged that the police had deliberately avoided arresting the accused vehicle driver, whose father was a builder.
Some of the agitators tried to barge into the police station and damaged furniture. However, the police dispersed them using mild force. The agitation was called off after Central zone DCP Tarun Joshi assured them that the accused would be arrested by Thursday morning.
Stringent action would be initiated against the persons responsible for the act, he said.
