Non-availability of adequate and appropriate spaces is cited by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) as a major obstacle in developing big parks in the old city.
The GHMC officials say large tracts of land are required for the purpose and it is difficult to get it within the area. “In absence of any big land parcels we are developing the parks in areas which are closer to this place,” Deputy Director, urban biodiversity wing Syed Mustafa said.
A park is being developed at a cost of Rs. 5 crore on a five-acre site at Kishanbagh, he said. The site being low-lying, sewerage water from nearby households used to be diverted into it. “At present, sewerage line is to be laid to divert the drain water, after which we will start dumping mud and take up plantation,” Mr. Mustafa said.
Two more parks are also planned around the Mir Alam tank, one at the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in front of National Highway 7 and another at Nau number area. The official said the proposal for the park near the STP is awaiting clearance from the government while a go-ahead for the one at ‘Nau’ number was received long ago and works are going on. He also stated that there are proposals to develop a park with walkways around the Gurram Cheruvu.
