A 40-year-old man provided a new lease of life to two persons by ‘donating’ his organs after death.
Sura Srinivas, of Mahbubnagar, was declared brain dead at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) earlier this month after suffering fatal injuries in an accident. His family was counselled about organ donation and their consent was obtained to harvest Srinivas’ liver, kidneys and eyes.
The liver was transplanted on August 18 in a 20-year-old student Kavya suffering from a rare genetic disorder called Wilson’s disease. The disease caused excess accumulation of cooper in Kavya’s vital organs. She was admitted to OGH with end-stage renal disease.
OGH conducted the transplant, which costs anywhere between Rs. 20 lakh in private hospitals, free of cost with support from Telangana government. Dr. Ch. Madhusudhan, head of surgical gastroenterology performed the transplant. Nephrologists also transplanted the kidney harvested from Srinivas into S. Ramulu, a resident of Vikarabad who was admitted at OGH. Mr. Ramulu was undergoing dialysis at OGH for over a year and was awaiting a transplant.
Srinivas’ kidney proved a match and doctors performed the transplant at the same time when the liver was being transplanted into Ms. Kavya. Srinivas’ eyes were also harvested and sent to L.V. Prasad Eye Institute.
The State’s Jeevandan has 2,533 prospective recipients for kidney and liver. Government hospitals including OGH and Gandhi Hospital have not performed transplants in the last one and half year, with OGH marking its first transplant in the recent past.
