As a prelude to providing 24x7 drinking water supply in Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK), the authorities successfully launched the pilot project of daily water supply scheme under the Housing Board Colony Reservoir limits in the town on Wednesday.
Initially, Karimnagar MLA G. Kamalakar had announced 24x7 water supply in the town in 2009 elections. The authorities planned to fix bulk water flow meters in Jyothi Nagar area limits and provided round-the-clock water supply. However, it failed to materialise due to various reasons.
Now, the MCK authorities have announced to provide 24x7 water supply to entire town as part of Smart City project, which was mandatory. Accordingly, the pilot project of providing daily water supply was taken up in the Housing Board Colony on an experimental basis. The municipal authorities have taken up strengthening of the existing water pipelines, checking of leakages and installation of necessary pumps etc.
Before providing 24x7 water supply, the authorities had planned to provide daily water supply to entire town covering 50 municipal divisions and supply daily 28 to 34 million litres (MLD) covering all the 10 reservoirs. The municipal officials including elected representatives led by Mayor S. Ravinder Singh, Mr. Kamalakar, MLC Naradasu Laxman Rao, Commissioner K. Shashanka and corporators had inspected the 24x7 water supply scheme in Nagpur city recently.
Talking to The Hindu on Wednesday, Mayor S. Ravinder Singh said they would ensure daily water supply for about one hour period in all other reservoir limits in a phased manner. After successful daily water supply scheme in Housing Board Colony limits, the next phase would begin in Rampur, Ramnagar and Gautaminagar reservoir limits very soon, he said.
Later, the municipal authorities would install bulk water flow meters to all the households and provide 24x7 water supply in the town. He said they were taking all measures to ensure each and every household was having tap connections and providing tap connections at a cost of ₹1 for the BPL families in the town.
