Youngsters busy on social media sites exchanging happenings and news is common these days. It will, however, be a pleasant surprise if the same youngsters are seen having trying their hand on cyber security aspects.

The State Government has focussed on providing cyber security training to youngsters from the next academic year. The subject will form part of the curriculum of the IX and X classes if the plans of the Government fructify.

Facing threats

Students of these classes will be trained ‘cyber hygiene’, as the officials called it, about the various threats and vulnerabilities they are likely to face in the cyber space. The idea had been contemplated as the youngsters use cyber tools especially social media without knowing about the threats/vulnerabilities of the data they share. Giving them hands on training in cyber security related subject will make them well versed with the operations. “It is teaching about a sort of dos and don’ts,” senior officials say.

Steps have accordingly been initiated to forge tie-ups with the IT establishment on providing training on the cyber security related aspects.

Evinces interest

A global major has conveyed its consent to provide training of trainers course to teachers selected by the Government and the trained teachers will in turn give hands-on training to their colleagues in the respective institutions.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to sensitise the staff of different departments that have IT interface on the possible threats to the network, an extensive one that has been put in place in the State administration over the years.

Resilient network

The State network had no doubt proved its resilience to attacks like the recent ransomware from which it remained immune. But sensitising officials concerned will further enhance the security related aspects of the network and make it more productive, a senior official said.
