The city police on Wednesday seized ₹10.8 lakh in cash, an LED monitor, a laptop and 17 mobile phones from a gang that was found indulging in cricket betting. While eight persons connected with the betting racket were arrested, the main bookies — Lucky Gaja and Gajanand — were yet to be traced, the Commissioner’s Task Force Additional DCP N. Koti Reddy said.

The key operative of the betting racket, P. Rajender Reddy, told the police that he learned from bookie Gajanand of Karwan that quick money could be made by organising betting on cricket matches.

The duo approached another bookie Lucky Gaja, who explained them how to accept betting on cricket matches from punters using WhatsApp. They had been indulging in cricket betting for the past two years.

On a tip-off that there was heavy betting on the ongoing IPL matches, the Task Force Inspector S. Mohan Kumar caught eight members of the gang.

An amount of ₹ 2.66 lakh, laptop and 15 mobile phones were seized from the arrested. The raids were conducted at Vanasthalipuram.
