Police on Tuesday stopped repair work at a Shiva temple located within 200 metres of the historic Charminar.

A police picket was posted at the temple to ensure work did not resume, South Zone DCP Tarun Joshi said. The matter was referred to officials of Archaeological Survey of India, GHMC and Endowment Department for further action.

In November 2012, Charminar police had registered a case following a complaint by the ASI, alleging that the temple committee had taken up the construction work without the mandatory permission. The police had forced the temple management to immediately stop the work then.

A police picket, which was then posted at the temple premises, was removed a month later after the temple committee assured the High Court that it would refrain from any construction without permission.

The DCP said the ASI, the GHMC and Endowment Department had been asked to furnish details about the repair work, for enabling further probe on the matter.
