Congress pins hopes on Rahul’s Sangareddy meeting

Indira Gandhi led Congress to massive victory after speech at the same venue in 1980

It will be a trip down the memory lane for the Congress old timers as AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi would address a public meeting at the same location his grandmother and late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi spoke 38 years ago.

Indira Gandhi addressed a gathering here in January 1980 triggering a massive victory for the Congress party not just in the then Andhra Pradesh but also across the country.

Congress party has selected the same location in Sangareddy for its “Telangana Praja Garjana” on June 1 to be addressed by Mr. Rahul Gandhi. Sangareddy, which is now a separate district carved out from Medak, will see a massive meeting where Mr. Gandhi is likely to take on the TRS government, particularly on the farmers and students issues.

Strong sentiment

“Lot of sentiment is attached to the venue. Mrs. Indira Gandhi picked Medak as her second constituency to contest and started her campaign from the very same place. Although she registered a landslide victory from Rae Bareilli in UP, she had retained the Medak seat. She served as country’s Prime Minister as Medak MP and remained so till she was assassinated in 1984,” said TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy.

The party did lot of brainstorming before finalising the venue. Instead of only going for show of strength, the TPCC finalised a venue which also had strong sentimental value. The present venue emotionally links each and every Congress worker and sympathiser with the party and its leadership.

Rahul’s itinerary

The party would also be organising a photo exhibition on Ms. Indira Gandhi election from Medak Lok Sabha seat at the public meeting’s venue. Rahul Gandhi will first watch the photo exhibition, pay floral tributes to his grandmother and then deliver his speech.

The TPCC chief is confident that Mr. Gandhi’s speech will be as historic as Ms. Indira Gandhi’s from the same venue.

Besides exposing the failures of BJP Government at the Centre and TRS Government in the State, Mr. Gandhi will also unveil the roadmap for Telangana Congress for next elections, Mr. Reddy said.

Cadre enthused

The AICC vice-president will release the chargesheet on the TRS Government highlighting its failures in every sector on the occasion.

The party also wants the Sangareddy meeting to be a show of its strength and is working on mobilising Congress party cadre and supporters from across the State. Leaders say cadre are already enthused with the meeting and will be energised to take on the TRS.
