The UGC Centre for Indian Ocean Studies (UGC CIOS), Osmania University is conducting an international conference on ‘China in Indian Ocean Region’ on November 13 and 14 to discuss and deliberate on China’s growing influence on the Indian Ocean region and its ‘Maritime Silk Route Plan’.
Director of the Centre, R. Sidda Goud, said it is necessary to have a deliberation on this topical issue with China now moving from land incursion and border issues to the waterways through the Indian Ocean.
Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) secretary K. Sateesh Reddy, who released the conference brochure, spoke of China’s interest in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) countries, especially the trade and commerce aspect in the bilateral business relations and its growth in the region.
The latest volume of Indian Ocean Digest, a bi-annual journal of the Centre was also released by Prof. B. Satyanarayana, president of the Osmania University Teachers Association (OUTA). He said China’s exports in electronic and pharmaceutical sectors are dominating the Indian market, thus leading to huge deficit in India’s balance of payments.
