The State Government has decided to take up construction of around 1,000 rainwater harvesting structures around the city.
Of these, the State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation would take up works on 500 structures, while the GHMC and the metro water works departments would set up 250 each.
The Municipal Administration Department had been asked to take up works on 250 more structures in all the seven urban local bodies around the city. Works on the project are slated to be launched by Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao on February 1.
Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration Department, Arvind Kumar, reviewed the issue with senior officials on Friday and discussed about the modalities for building the rainwater harvesting structures. There was need to create awareness among the people to promote water conservation and improve sustainable yields on groundwater in the borewells, he said.
He wanted the officials concerned to work out the modalities for formulating uniform design for the structures, along with a unique logo, so that they were identifiable by the display boards. Officials are to ensure proper maintenance with fencing and geo-tagging of the structures. In addition, steps should be initiated to reactivate the defunct rainwater harvesting structures and encourage people to maintain these structures, he said, adding that all the community resource persons in the GHMC limits and the Swachh sevaks should be involved in creating awareness among the people.
