Complex surgery performed at Sunshine

September 26, 2012 09:58 am | Updated 09:58 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Surgeons of Sunshine Hospital in a press release in Hyderabad on Tuesday said that they have successfully performed a Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) on a high risk 65-year-old patient who had suffered a brain stroke and his main arteries that supply blood from and to the heart were blocked. Apart from the brain stroke and blockage, the patient was also hypertensive, doctors added.

The CAS process is done to unblock carotid arteries, which are the main arteries that supply blood, by placing devices like stents that restore the blood supply. According to Director, Cath lab, Sunshine Hospitals, Dr. Sharat Reddy, the patient had 99 per cent blocking of the arteries for the past two years.

“CAS is minimally invasive and done under local anaesthesia. This patient had both artery blockage and brain stroke. And yet, we managed to do the procedure. The patient is doing well,” Dr. Sharat Reddy said.
