Aggressively pursuing its ambitious growth strategies and business diversification plans, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has laid major thrust on environmentally sustainable coal mining by implementing multifarious eco-friendly initiatives to mitigate damage to environment.

The State-owned premier coal producing company has carved a niche for itself in processing of overburden (OB) material removed during coal extraction in opencast mines and utilising the processed overburden (POB) extensively in stowing operations in underground mines and various civil works.

The SCCL has, so far, produced 19,05,241 cubic metres of POB at its five processing plants situated in the coal belt region spanning six districts, including Bhadradri-Kothagudem in Telangana.

The company pioneered in optimum utilisation of the innovative product of POB as a potential alternative to river sand in filling voids created in the process of extraction of coal in underground mines, which is imperative to protect surface features.

Low exhaust emissions

The premier coal company has also earned wide reputation for making efficient use of 52,14,559 m3 of bottom ash in stowing operations in the underground mines, diesel additives in heavy earth moving machinery for reducing the exhaust emissions, development of vegetative barriers and other green initiatives.

Catching attention

The SCCL’s eco-friendly initiatives displayed through various exhibits at the ongoing World Environment Expo-2018 in New Delhi have received considerable attention and applause from the visitors, SCCL sources said.

The company has showcased its whole gamut of eco-friendly practices including effluent treatment plants, bio-engineering of overburdens, development of eco-parks and biological reclamation activities besides a plethora of prestigious awards for best environmentally sustainable coal mining practices.
