City to witness Jane Jacobs walks

May 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Walk, observe, connect and share. This is the newest way of identifying local civic issues. Scores of people are expected to go round their neighbourhood this weekend, reviving the spirit of the famous Jane Jacobs walk.

Two walks are being planned at Moghalpura and Marredpally on Saturday and Sunday respectively. The Moghalpura walk will start from Daira Mir Momin and end at Gulzar Houz on May 9 and the next day, the Marredpally walk will be taken out from St. John’s Church to Ramser Café. Various NGOs, walkers’ association and cycle track development organisations are being roped in to make people leave the isolation of their home and experience their own areas.

Just about anybody can take part in these walks to make a difference to their lives. All that is required is concern for the place where one lives. “These walks are an attempt to understand the subtleties that help sustain neighbourhoods in a certain way due to their history, culture, demographics and spatial development,” says Sneha Parthasarthy, one of the hosts of the walk.

Along with her friends Naheema Shahnawaz, Abdul Bari and Suryanarayana Murthy, she has taken the initiative to organise the Jane Jacobs walk in the city to familiarise people with the place where they live, work and play. This is the first time that the Jane Jacobs walks are being organised in Hyderabad to mark the birth anniversary of the American-Canadian journalist activist whose grassroots efforts helped protect neighbourhoods. The idea is to make people walk, discover and respond to the complexities of their areas, Ms. Parthasarthy said.

“Such walks were of immense help in Mumbai and Ahmedabad in protecting neighbourhoods,” says Suryanarayana Murthy, a well-known architect, who will host the Moghalpura walk.
