Hyderabad police acquire Image Enhancing Software that improves quality of video footages recorded in CCTVs

Taking a step further in using technology to crack crime mysteries, the city police on Thursday acquired Image Enhancing Software. The software designed by a foreign-based firm will be used to improve quality of images and video footages recorded in closed circuit cameras.

Although scores of CCTV cameras have been installed in the city, many do not comply with the specifications laid down by the police leading to poor quality video footage. In some cases, factors like distance, lighting and background also play a spoilsport. It’s here the police plan to make use of the new software for investigation, officials said.

“The image enhancement software is of high standard. The quality of images can be improved to a great extent and it helps in speedy investigations,” Police Commissioner M. Mahendar Reddy said. They have hired an M.Sc (Forensic Science) graduate to handle the work.

In the past, they depended on national security agencies or forensic laboratories for the job. “It took a long time and resulted in delays. Sometimes officials zeroed in on suspects after studying their physique, body language and vehicles used by them,” a police official explained.
