City generates 4,000 MT of garbage daily

June 15, 2015 10:27 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:10 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

From collection, transfer to disposal, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been struggling hard to manage around 3,500 metric ton of waste and garbage generated daily in the city.

Senior officials put the actual garbage generated in the GHMC jurisdiction to around 4,000 MT of which a chunk gets managed by the rag pickers. “General estimates look at rag pickers handling around 8 per cent of garbage and as per that calculation, the civic body has to handle around 3,500 MT to 3,600 MTs on daily basis,” pointed out an official.

The GHMC has a workforce of 23,000 deployed, mostly outsourced, for the tasks of sweeping streets, collection and shifting the garbage to the designated dump yard at Jawaharnagar. Apart from manpower, the civic body has problems with vehicles and equipments required in sanitation initiatives. The present fleet involved in garbage disposal has been put at 300 ranging from small tippers to 25 tonners while proposals for acquisition of 50 new big and medium-size vehicles await clearance for quite sometime.
