A child marriage was averted on Tuesday after the Bhongir SHE team conducted a public awareness programme on the issue.

During the programme, a villager informed the policemen that the marriage of a 16-year-old girl from Ramojinayak Thanda, Gollagudem, was scheduled to take place on March 13. She was to be married off to a 23-year old man of the same thanda.

Acting on the tip-off, the SHE team, along with the Thurkapally police, rushed to the girl’s house. They talked both parents of the minor girl out of their intention to perform the marriage.

Rachakonda Commissioner Mahesh M. Bhagwat appealed to the public against performing marriage of individuals below the stipulated age.
