HYDERABAD: A surveillance camera installed in a corporate school on Tellapur road had enabled the police to nab two car drivers involved in the rape case of a 22-year-old software engineer few days ago on the city suburbs.

Car mechanics also played a crucial role in tracing the drivers -- Vedicherlla Satish (30) and his friend N. Venkateswarlu (28) of PJR Colony at Yellammabanda in Kukatpally. After the Madhapur police registered a case, investigators were struggling for the clues to trace the vehicle in which the accused kidnapped the techie.

Even as a police team was collecting more information from the victim, another team came to know about a CCTV installed outside the corporate school. The police team swung into action and obtained video footage which displayed that the car passed on the route that night.

However, the footage was very blurred. As it became more difficult to trace the vehicle through the blurred images, the police have decided to take the assistance of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as they have the special software to clear the images. While the agency is on the job, the Cyberabad police took the help of car mechanics to trace the vehicle.

“After examining several vehicles, the mechanics zeroed in an ice-white colour Volvo car of D6-S 60 Model. We then went to car showroom in Banjara Hills and collected the details of buyers and found that only 77 of them owned these vehicles in the city. We finally came to know that a manager of a real-estate company had taken the vehicle on lease from a travel agency in Jubilee Hills. Satish was working as a driver with the manager”.

“With this, we cracked the case and arrested him and his friend”, the official explained. At 6 p.m. on Oct. 18, Satish met his friend Venkateswarlu at Yellammabanda as his owner was away from the city. He decided to visit the IT area and kidnap a woman by posing as a cab driver and rape her.

According to their plan, the duo reached the Mind Space at about 8.20 p.m. where he managed to board the victim into the car promising to drop her at her hostel in Gowlidoddi but took her to Kollur and committed the heinous crime.

The duo were booked on charges of kidnapping, gang rape, criminal intimidation, illegal confinement and other relevant charges under IPC.
