A 23-year-old businessman Manoj was burnt alive after the BMW car in which he was travelling crashed on to a barrier while negotiating a turn on Outer Ring Road and fell off it before bursting into flames in Abdullapurmet crossroads on Sunday. His two friends escaped with burns. His two friends travelling with him, however, survived with burns.
The car owner, Manoj, hailing from Rajahmundry but living in Tamil Nadu, picked up his two friends — Vasu and Ravi from Gachibowli in a black BMW. They were going towards the Vijayawada national highway from Shamshabad on the ORR stretch when Vasu, who was driving the car, failed to negotiate a curve on the ORR approach road and rammed into the railing.
The car overturned and fell onto the road below due to the speed at which it hit the railing. The mishap happened soon after the car crossed the toll gate at Abdullapurmet crossroads. Passers-by and ORR mobile team managed to pull out Vasu and Ravi through the vehicle’s sunroof.
However, they could not save Manoj sitting on the rear seat as the iron rod of the railing pierced into the vehicle making it difficult for the rescuers to pull him out. Within minutes, flames engulfed the vehicle and Manoj was burnt alive even as people watched in horror, Hayathnagar Sub-Inspector P. Sudhakar said.
ORR mobile staff and the police rushed the injured Vasu and Ravi to two different corporate hospitals where their condition is stable.
“We have registered a case and efforts are on to collect more details from the victims’ family members,” Mr. Sudhakar said.
