‘Bus services increased in small, medium towns’

Public transport was the lifeline of small and medium towns in Telangana, opined S. Satyanarayana, Chairman of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC).

Given this, the TSRTC has increased bus services by 8% in small and medium towns for the convenience of people in the past three years.

While over 150 new buses were added to the fleet, various posts in the Corporation were also filled up without any delay. The public transport and road development go hand in hand in rural areas where infrastructure was poor, he said.

Different departments in the State administration would have to help in building transit infrastructure in towns, Mr. Satyanarayana added. He was speaking at a session on public transport at the 10th Urban Mobility India Conference which entered its second day on Sunday.

“Transportation is a lifeline for students and those employed. Development of public transport in the towns will be a connecting link between villages and semi-urban space,” explained Mr. Satyanarayana. The TRSTC has also started parcel delivery system in the State to use its wide network of buses.

In cities like Hyderabad, the Corporation has already reached a saturation point. Maintenance of infrastructure and recruitment of staff was an important aspect of developing public transportation, he added.
