Thieves took away gold ornaments weighing nearly a kilo after sneaking into an Non-Resident Indian’s house at Chanchalguda on Thursday but left behind jewellery weighing two kilos mysteriously.
Along with 960 gm of ornaments, they made off with Rs. 8 lakh in cash and 12,000 Canadian dollars. The offenders also took away two Apple iPhones.
Investigators believe the thieves jumped onto the terrace of the NRI Maqbool Khan’s house, sneaked inside through the staircase and entered the hall.
They then forcibly lifted the doors of the almirahs using a steel rod and collected the jewellery.
“The total gold jewellery weighed more than three kilos. For some reason, they did not bother to take away the remaining gold of two kilos,” the police said.
Mr. Khan, who came to the city with his family a few days ago to perform his son’s marriage, had gone out to attend a marriage at a nearby function hall in the area by locking the main gate.
Door kept openBut the family apparently forgot to lock the door connected to the staircase leading to the terrace, Mirchowk ACP S. Gangadhar said. Mr. Khan’s family members approached the Dabeerpura police after returning home and noticing it was ransacked.
Hotelier’s house burgledMeanwhile, gold ornaments weighing 25 tolas were stolen by unidentified persons from the house of a hotel businessman at Kothapet this afternoon.
T. Narasimha Rao and his family went to Jeedimetla to attend the funeral of a relative when their house was burgled.
Thieves also struck at a tailor shop, a photo studio and a beauty parlour in Kukatpally and decamped with garments, cameras and other valuables. They broke into three shops by lifting the shutters, the police said.
