Close relatives of a retired railway employee from Nacharam, Pandu Ramchander, who was declared brain dead after suffering a stroke, donated his organs to needy patients under the State-run organ donation programme ‘Jeevandan’, a press release said.

The wife of the deceased railway employee K. Padma Bai and daughter Sangeetha, said that all his life Ramchander strived to help youngsters. “My father always helped unemployed youth get jobs. We thought it would be fitting that even after his demise, he would be helpful to the needy. That’s why we decided to donate his organs and save five lives,” Ms. Sangeetha said.

Ramchander suffered a brain stroke on May 14 and was admitted to Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad. On May 16, the doctors shifted him to Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills for further treatment. Despite concerted efforts, Jeevandan officials said that on May 18, hospital neurosurgeon Dr. Alok Ranjan declared him brain dead.

Jeevandan co-ordinator for Apollo Hospitals Girish Shetty contacted Ramchander’s daughter Ms. Sangeetha and wife Padma Bai for organ donation, who consented immediately. According to officials, two kidneys, one liver and two heart valves were harvested and sent to needy patients based on their online registration.
