Mayor Mohd. Majid Hussain on Monday has asked GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu to issue charge memos to the officers concerned for their negligence in repairing a damaged catch pit which led to the death of the eight-year-old Asif Mohiuddin at Bilalnagar in the old city on last evening.

Mr. Hussain expressed shock over the incident and wanted the engineers to be held accountable for their roles and works in their respective areas.

The chief engineer was told to check the progress of the ongoing desilting works and take severe action including suspensions of officials for not complying with orders.

The special monsoon emergency teams should be formed in each of the four zones and two to three labourers should be present at each of the identified stagnation point to clear water logging during a heavy downpour. These details should also be shared with the corporator concerned for better coordination.

The proposed south zone emergency cell will also be opened later this month and it has to be equipped with the latest machinery. As per schedule, storm water drains are to be desilted in the east, north and west zones at an estimated cost of Rs.4 crore and the work is to be completed by May 15.

With the works in the central and south zones progressing slowly, desilting is expected to be done by the month end at a cost of Rs.8 crore, the Mayor was informed.
