In the light of the CIB registering cases against certain police officials on the charge of criminal conspiracy in the encounter killing of Maoist leader Azad, revolutionary writer Varavara Rao has urged the agency to also book Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram for the same guilt.

Mr. Rao wrote a letter to CBI Joint Director here V.V. Lakshmi Narayana stating that Azad was killed when he was carrying a letter from social activist Swami Agnivesh to Mr. Chidambaram.

The letter was an ongoing communication between the Swami and the Minister for initiating a peace process with the Maoists. The killing was to scuttle the process.

Mr. Rao sought that the Governor, the Home Minister, the Director General of Police and Superintendent of Police of Adilabad also be identified as accused and charged with criminal conspiracy because they had at different points of time tried to prejudice investigation into Azad's killing by stating that the encounter was genuine.

He wanted the personnel of Special Intelligence Bureau, Intelligence Bureau and Greyhounds who picked up Azad from Nagpur on July 1 last year to be brought to book. The government shielded them.
