Though it will be a shot in the arm for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) when water is drawn at its full capacity from the Krishna phase-3 and Godavari phase-1 projects, the city will also need a better storage capacity to hold the drinking water which will be supplied.

“We need to synchronise the distribution of water and also set up a better storage system to hold the supply once it comes. The HMWSSB will need bigger reservoirs basically. Presently the current capacity is just enough for the drinking water being supplied,” mentioned a senior HMWSSB official.

The official explained that new trunk mains to manage the incoming water supply would be needed, as the supply will go up by a huge amount. “The Godavari phase-1 project will draw 170 million gallons per day (MGD), while the Krishna phase-3 project, will bring in 90 MGD, which will add to Hyderabad’s existing 340 MGD,” he mentioned, and added that presently works are ongoing to certain places for the same.
