Bear mauls farmer to death

A bear gored to death a tribal farmer at his field on the fringes of forest at Gumpanpally village of Atchampet mandal in Mahabubnagar district in the early hours of Monday.

The police said Bodya Naik (45) was sleeping in the field to guard against destruction of his maize crop by wild boars when the bear approached him from forest around 5 am. , Naik woke up hearing the bear’s grunt and aimed the dragon light by his side at its face. The bear jumped on Naik and dragged him about 100 metres and mauled him to death.

The bear was stuck in a trap for more than seven hours until a rescue team of the forest from Nehru Zoological Park arrived and caught it with the help of tranquiliser. It was stated that the villagers laid the traps near the fields as they were hardly 15 to 20 metres from the forest and frequently raided by wild boars. The police rushed to the spot after Naik was fatally attacked by bear and prevented villagers from killing the animal.
