Banks told to be more accessible

Every eligible citizen should have bank account, says Chief Secretary

Bankers should ensure that every citizen in the State will open bank accounts by utilising the services of Bank Mitras, said Chief Secretary S. K. Joshi here on Thursday.

Chairing the State level Financial Inclusion Committee meeting at the Secretariat here on Thursday, Mr. Joshi reviewed the telecommunication facilities for banks across the State, functioning of Bank Mitras, sanction of Mudra loans, financial literacy campaign, Jan Dhan Yojana accounts, issuance of RuPay cards, details of bank accounts and Bhima Yojana scheme, among others.

There were over 4,185 Bank Mitras in the State and their services should be effectively used by the banks and banks should be accessible to people. Opening of bank accounts was a continuous process and every eligible person should have an account and banks should take necessary steps for this, the Chief Secretary said. In 2017-18, Mudra loans to the tune of ₹ 5,469 crore were sanctioned (107 %). The meeting discussed the benefits under the Jan Dhan Bhima Yojana, Suraksha Bhima Yojana and decided that extensive loans should be sanctioned to medium sized enterprises.

Mr. Joshi directed the Finance Department officials to analyse existing schemes for extending insurance facility to women and farmers.

The meeting was attended by Finance Principal Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, Joint Secretary, Institutional Finance, GoI, S. Srinivasa Rao, SLBC convenor Manikandan, Finance Department Joint Secretary Sai Prasad and others.
