Presses for ban till end of polling

The TDP on Friday lodged a complaint with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) against a Telugu newspaper for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

The party requested the CEC to ban the newspaper till completion of elections.

‘Repeat offence’

In a letter written to the CEC, TDP politburo member Yanamala Ramakrishnudu pointed out that the newspaper, owned by YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, had allocated four pages to eulogise him on Friday, and also to denigrate and criticise TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The newspaper had done the same several times in the past, including on April 2, 11 and 24.

The newspaper was spreading blatant lies and was engaging in falsification of facts through articles published in it to malign TDP and its president.

Such attempts need to be curbed to ensure free and fair polls in Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Ramakrishnudu said.

“The newspaper has been crossing all limits of ethics of journalism and decency and is factually acting as a pamphlet of YSR Congress Party,” the TDP leader said.

He requested the CEC to ban the newspaper at least till completion of the elections, treat all such news items as paid articles, and to account them against the YSR Congress.
