Various cab and taxi services operating in the city might fare well on rolling out quick and reliable services but fail miserably in checking the basic antecedents of the chauffeurs.
Most of the companies, which are quite active on mobile and web based platforms, have gone on to hire drivers within hours. Interactions with different cab drivers in the city have revealed that in a bid to beat competition, the drivers were being lured with extra perks and commissions without much thought to the background of the drivers.
“I went to the office of my cab company in the morning and within some time I was hired,” said A. Saidulu, a cabbie, who multitasks for two companies. “I had to submit my license and my photo and in return was asked to behave well with customers. I was then explained the basic operations of the company.”
When quizzed, another driver with a leading cab service provider shared that he was never even asked if he had any case against him or was involved in road accidents. “After I started working for the company, I was encouraged to get more drivers. I had helped some of my friends join the service and it is easy, as the process is not too strict.”
Well aware of the present situation, many of the drivers now say they do not mind background checks even as most of the cab companies are under the transport department scanner.
