Tragedy struck a working couple when their 20-month-old baby girl died reportedly due to asphyxia while being fed milk mixed with slices of roti by the baby-sitter at L.B. Nagar on Wednesday.

An accountant with Aurobindo’s corporate office, Lava Kumar, and his wife working in a private company, left their daughter, Anvita, at Laxmi baby care centre in Alkapuri around 8.30 a.m. before starting for their offices. The couple gave a bottle of milk mixed with pieces of roti to be given to the kid, the L.B. Nagar Inspector, P. Srinivas Reddy, said.

“I started feeding the milk to the baby when she suddenly became suffocated. I was scared and rushed the baby to nearby corporate hospital where doctors declared her dead,” the baby-sitter, Laxmi, told the police.

Kumar was passing by Chaitanyapuri when he got the phone call from Ms. Laxmi who said the baby was serious.

“Everything was over before we reached the hospital. They showed me the baby’s body on arrival,” cried Kumar. A case of rash and negligent act resulting in death was registered against Ms. Laxmi following a complaint from the girl’s father.

The body was handed over to the parents after performing autopsy. The forensic doctors didn’t confirm the cause of death. Sources said that the doctors found pieces of roti in the baby’s throat and surmise she died of asphyxia.
