Azhar invited to contest from TS

Former India captain Mohd Azharuddin says he is really happy that Telangana State Congress Committee president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy has asked him to contest the next Assembly elections in Telangana.

In a chat with The Hindu on Friday, Azhar, however, said it was too early to say a final word. "But, definitely, I am pleased with the way the State leaders have treated me and are giving me the respect. Anything can happen in the run-up to any election," he observed.

"Yes, our dream is to see that Congress is voted back to power. After all, it is my home State and I would love to work for that goal. I am already involved in campaigning for the party across India and so I will be actively involved in any campaign in Telangana too," he said.

Reflecting on the prospects in Telangana for the Congress, Azhar felt the party had already a very good momentum and all that was needed was to put up a combined effort to ensure that it came to power.

"It is time for all of us in the party - be it seniors, second-rung leaders or the workers to put in the desired efforts. We should always look ahead with optimism. What is wrong with that? There will be some issues before the elections which should only help our cause," Azhar pointed out.
