SAVE entrusted the task of preparing 25,000 small and 200 big idols
To encourage use of clay idols during the coming Vinayak Chathurthi festival, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will be making available ‘Paryavarna Ganapathi’ idols prepared with clay at Rs.10 each.
As part of the Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project (HCIP), the initiative is taken to check the large scale immersion of idols prepared with Plaster of Paris and chemical colours.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, HMDA Member Environment and HCIP Project Manager, Sunil Kumar Gupta said a distribution network covering the entire city was being set up to offer 25,000 small idols of 8 inch size during the festival. The task of preparing these idols had been entrusted to SAVE, the city-based NGO.
Nearly 200 big clay idols of 5-feet size were also being prepared and the same would be offered free of cost to educational institutions, resident welfare associations and community groups. The idols would be prepared by SAVE at a site provided at Indira Park and the entire lot was expected to be ready at least five days before the festival.
Mr. Gupta invited interested groups to form Lake Protection Committees and join the initiative by way of a vigil on activities around water bodies, spreading awareness against plastic and adopting lakes in the long term.
For the distribution purpose, other voluntary groups such as CARE, Sukuki Exnora, Chatri and APSA would assist the HMDA in establishing 25 centres and more if required, he added.
Further details on clay idols can be had from SAVE (Ph.27654336), Sukuki Exnora (Ph.9849047827) and HMDA (Ph.9177223489).
