The drive will target vehicle number plates that are in variance with the prescribed format or are tampered with to avoid detection by the traffic police.
All the vehicle owners, who fixed fancy number plates to their vehicles, will have to replace them with prescribed format plates from Monday as the city police is all set to launch a special drive against fancy number plates.
The drive will target vehicle number plates that are in variance with the prescribed format or are tampered with to avoid detection by the traffic police. A fine up to Rs.5,000 will be levied on motorists with such number plates, a press release said on Wednesday.
According to rule 50 and 51 of Motor Vehicle Act, the number plates of personal vehicles should contain bold letters and numbers in black on a white background and for commercial vehicles they should be in black letters on yellow background. Use of special characters and any other insignia is not allowed.
The drive will also include verification of vehicle documents such as driving license, registration certificate, pollution under control certificate, insurance papers and valid permits.
