Badminton champion Jwala Gutta took up the cause of animals held in zoos across the country by demanding closure of zoos and a ban on captive breeding of wild animals.

“Each year crores of rupees are being spent on maintenance of the zoos and even after this, they are failing to keep animals in proper condition. Hence, zoos should be closed and the Government should ensure that their natural habitat be preserved,” she maintained.

“Wild animals are being kept in close confinements resulting in severe depression. Elephants are often kept chained, and tigers and lions are forced to spend time in close confinements,” the badminton ace told reporters here on Friday. Jwala was campaigning for People for the Ethical Treatment of all Animals (PeTA) here.

A video shot by PeTA, depicting the plight of animals in closed confines at zoos, was also screened.
