Four youngsters were detained by KPHB police of Cyberabad on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a class 10 student, Vihari, whose body was found in a tank five days ago.

While the suspects denied their involvement in the murder, the investigators are analysing call data record of their mobile phones to ascertain their claims. The teenager was living with her paternal uncle, Murahari, at Dayarguda in Kukatpally. Her father died while she was a child while her mother re-married and was living separately.

Sixteen-year-old Vihari had left the house in the evening on June 9 and did not return home. After searching for her for two days, Murahari approached Kukatpally police who registered a missing case. Meanwhile, a decomposed body of a teenager was found in Ambir tank of Pragathinagar in KPHB police station area on June 18.

The KPHB got the body preserved in Gandhi Hospital mortuary after the autopsy was performed. A murder case of unidentified person was registered as the victim’s hands were found tied with a rope. The killers had fastened another rope around a boulder and tied it to her waist, apparently to ensure that the body sank in the water.

On seeing the victim’s photo in the newspapers, her family members approached the police and identified that the victim was the missing girl, Vihari, based on the clothes and the anklet she wore. “We couldn’t identify the body as it was highly decomposed. But, samples were collected for DNA fingerprinting and the skull was sent for superimposition to confirm her identity,” Madhapur DCP T. Yoganand said.

Investigation revealed that two youngsters, Subrahmanyam and Mallikarjun, used to frequently meet the teenager outside. On June 9, the victim was last seen speaking with her friend, Niharika, around 8.30 p.m. near a temple in Dayarguda.

“She left the place telling Niharika that she was going to meet a friend and did not return home,” the police said.
