The body of Nikhila Mallemadugula, 20, the city girl from Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), who drowned in Mannu Palla Lake in Manipal, was brought to city on Sunday morning. She was the daughter of The Hindu Special Correspondent M.L. Melly Maitreyi.
She along with Kiran Chandramouli, both students of third-year computer science and Shaunak Mahbubani, a fourth-year computer science student, were pedalling a boat when it capsized. While Shaunak managed to swim back, Nikhila drowned and Kiran is still missing.
Nikhila's last rites were performed at Punjagutta crematorium. Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy expressed shock and grief over her death. Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy visited Nikhila's house.
