The usual buzz at the working women’s hostel in Gowlidoddi near Gachibowli was missing on Saturday as hosteliers were glued to the television sets since morning.

While some girls wore a sombre look, others were visibly perturbed over the fact that six of their hostel mates died in the road accident on their way to Shirdi. K. Manasa, I. Krishna Sahitya, S.M. Pujita, K. Savarnika, P. Divya and Uma Maheshwari were on a pilgrimage to Shirdi and were to come back in a couple of days.

Employed at TCS in Madhapur, these six girls were part of a group of students who came to the capital from MVGR Engineering College in Vizianagaram. “I did not go on the trip as I came back from my hometown only last week. It sends a shiver down my spine to even think of the consequences had I joined them,” their roommate Teja Rani says. Unable to stay in the same room with empty beds, which reminded her of her deceased friends, Rani has now shifted out to another room.

The hostel came to know about the tragic accident after one of her roommate’s parents informed Teja Rani about the incident.

Hostel Warden Jaya Lakshmi recollects that the group was lively and fun-loving. “These girls used to come back from their training at 2 p.m. everyday and would hang around together,” she recounts.

“Only last night they gave me a farewell before going to Shirdi. It’s unfortunate that they had to meet such a tragic end,” she says.
