J. Praveen Reddy was a PG student at the London School of Business Management
Businessman J. Sudhakar Reddy was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his youngest son, J. Praveen Reddy, from London to join the family for the marriage arrangements of the latter's brother.
But his family, relatives, friends and well-wishers were shocked on Saturday on learning that Praveen was critically injured in London the previous night after he was stabbed in his flat. “A surgery was performed and the presence of his parents or family members is required before deciding on further treatment,” the doctors reportedly told the police there.
Visas, finally
Praveen's father, who lives in Pragathinagar of Vanasthalipuram, appealed to the government to provide visas immediately so that the family could attend to their ailing son. Responding to his appeals through media, Union Minister for External Affairs S.M. Krishna called him up and assured all help.
The Minister told him that the British Consulate had promised to provide visas and they should go to Chennai. Mr. Sudhakar Reddy and his cousin, Madhusudhan Reddy, will fly to London on Sunday or Monday depending on the availability of flights.
Praveen's mother Jyothi is in a state of shock.
Twenty-six-year-old Praveen is pursuing his PG programme in the London School of Business Management.
Call to parents
Two days ago, Praveen called up his parents to inform them that he would join the family by February 17 and he had also booked flight tickets. He was the youngest of the businessman's three sons. The eldest one, J. Rajashekhar Reddy, is living in the U.S.
“We were busy preparing for the marriage and planning to complete some formalities on February 17. But this news has shattered us,” the businessman said.
Last call
A few minutes before the attack, Praveen had spoken to his eldest brother. He was the first to be informed by the police about the attack.
Mr. Rajashekhar Reddy, in turn, called up his parents in Hyderabad and broke the news. “We're yet to know the details but they said Praveen was lying outside the flat with bleeding wounds,” Vijay Kumar, a neighbour said.
Praveen studied did his B.Com. in a private college here before heading for London in 2010.

If we are self sufficient why should our people go abroad for education
or job.Indians take pride in overseas jobs. The more intelligent, affluent
consider it is their achievement. While one in several cases suffer there
the possibility if others being affected cannot be ignored. If our
country takes steps to improve the general conditions here and restrict
foreign progress,we can be a model for other countries. This depends
purely on our politicians who have no time to spare for the public.
I do not understand why a single situation is blown out of proportion with so huge coverage. This is unwarranted and a case where a rich boy has had some issues with some friends. Such stabs occur daily in Indian streets and everywhere. What has media done to stop those? I find this level of covering this story unacceptable.
Thirumangai, I feel you are barking up the wrong tree in this case. The issue here is not the foreign country but unruly behaviour among the younger generation these days. From the reports we have so far it seems to be that some form of party was held between friends/ acquaintances and a knife was used presumably following some form of disagreement. The same type of behaviour can happen in any country including India.
The boy may have been at fault, if financial transactions are involved. It's a shame that Telugu-speaking are often involved in brawls in Australia too. They bring bad name to the Indians who in turn get attacked.
I agree with Natraaj. As per available evidence, this was a matter of a
tiff between roommates turned fatal. I have in the last month seen at
least 2 other such cases right here in the Hindu, only the boys
concerned were Indian, the occurrence was in India, and maybe the guys
weren't as affluent as the boy here. Those cases didn't get half the
attention this one got. One is of course sad at the loss of life, but
undue coverage has been given to this case. Even then the Hindu's
coverage has been muted if we consider the one given by other papers.
I have no sympathy towards the family or to the dead or to the guilty. Looks like bad parenting on everyone's part. Bunch of hill bellies from Hyderabad went to foreign land for wrong purposes and screwed their lives!
